چکیده

Breathers are spatially localized and time periodic solutions of extended Hamiltonian dynamical systems. In this paper we study excitation thresholds for (nonlinearly dynamically stable) ground state breather or standing wave solutions for networks of coupled nonlinear oscillators and wave equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type. Excitation thresholds are rigorously characterized by variational methods. The excitation threshold is related to the optimal (best) constant in a class of discrete interpolation inequalities related to the Hamiltonian energy. We establish a precise connection among d, the dimensionality of the lattice, 2σ + 1, the degree of the nonlinearity and the existence of an excitation threshold for discrete nonlinear Schrödinger systems (DNLS). We prove that if σ ≥ 2 d , then ground state standing waves exist if and only if the total power is larger than some strictly positive threshold, νthresh(σ, d). This proves a conjecture of Flach, Kaldko & MacKay [13] in the context of DNLS. We also discuss upper and lower bounds for excitation thresholds for ground states of coupled systems of NLS equations, which arise in the modeling of pulse propagation in coupled arrays of optical fibers.

Interface solitons in quadratic nonlinear photonic lattices

We study the properties of two-color nonlinear localized modes which may exist at the interfaces separating two different periodic photonic lattices in quadratic media, focusing on the impact of phase mismatch of the photonic lattices on the properties, stability, and threshold power requirements for the generation of interface localized modes. We employ both an effective discrete model and con...

Nonlinear localized modes at phase slips in two-dimensional photonic lattices

We analyze the existence and stability of nonlinear modes localized at phase-slip waveguide channels and their intersections in two-dimensional photonic lattices with rectangular symmetry. While in linear lattices only one localized mode of this type may exist under special conditions, nonlinearity supports a variety of localized modes including the modes which bifurcate from the symmetric stat...

Compactification tuning for nonlinear localized modes in sawtooth lattices.

We discuss the properties of nonlinear localized modes in sawtooth lattices, in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger model with general on-site nonlinearity. Analytic conditions for existence of exact compact three-site solutions are obtained, and explicitly illustrated for the cases of power-law (cubic) and saturable nonlinearities. These nonlinear compact modes appear as continua...

Nonlinear surface modes in monoatomic and diatomic lattices

We investigate the structure and stability of nonlinear surface modes in one-dimensional monoatomic and diatomic lattices. For a monoatomic lattice, we show analytically and numerically that nonlinearity can support a stable surface mode whose maximum amplitude is shifted from the surface. In the limit of strong nonlinearity when this mode is localized on a few atoms near the surface, we find t...

The effect of material nonlinearity on the band gap for TE and TM modes in square and triangular lattices

In this article, by using the method of finite difference time domain (FDTD) and PML boundary conditions, we have studied the photonic band gaps for TE and TM modes in square and triangular lattices consisting of air holes in dielectric medium and compared the results. In addition, the effect of nonlinearity of the photonic crystal background on the photonic band gaps and comparison with the re...
